Why Mendocino Nature Guide
Led by Sue Coulter, founder and naturalist guide, Mendocino Nature Guide offers immersive experiences on the Mendocino Coast that go beyond a typical outdoor adventure. Each hike, program, or gathering is thoughtfully designed to foster connection—to nature, to one another, and to ourselves.
What sets us apart is our approach: we don’t just explore the landscape—we build a relationship with it. With decades of experience, Sue guides participants to not only experience the beauty of the coast, but to feel part of it, cultivating a deeper sense of care and stewardship.
Rooted in the belief that healing and nature are reciprocal, these experiences invite you to slow down, reconnect, and rediscover your place in the natural world. More than an adventure, it’s an opportunity to recharge, grow, and carry that connection with you long after you leave.
Our Principles
● Our Mission & Philosophy
Through connecting with the natural world, we deepen our connection to ourselves—finding presence, clarity, and a sense of belonging.
●
Rooted in Connection
●
Guided by the wonder
Let curiosity, joy, and awe lead the way, opening the door to meaningful and memorable experiences in nature.
●
Learning from the land
When we slow down and truly notice, the land becomes a teacher—offering insight, stories, and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
●
Reciprocity in practice
By approaching nature with gratitude and respect, we nurture a relationship of giving back—helping to sustain and care for the places that sustain us.
Meet Sue
● Our Story
Sue’s love of nature began in childhood, exploring the small “wild” spaces around her suburban home on the East Coast. Being outdoors was where she felt most connected to herself, and that early curiosity grew into a lifelong passion for the natural world.
After moving to California in 1989, Sue’s understanding of nature expanded dramatically. The wild beauty of California’s landscapes awakened a deeper sense of connection and wonder. While working at an environmental camp, she discovered the transformative power of immersive experiences in nature—sleeping beneath the stars, backpacking through Yosemite for the first time, and exploring the incredible diversity of the state’s ecosystems. Those experiences shaped not only her relationship with the outdoors, but also the path of her life’s work.
For decades, Sue has guided and educated youth through charter schools, homeschool programs, environmental camps, and nonprofits, using nature itself as the classroom. Today, as a Certified California Naturalist, she shares her deep knowledge of the Mendocino Coast’s forests, tide pools, wildlife, and ecological wonders with visitors of all ages.
Her guiding style is relaxed, welcoming, and rooted in curiosity. She invites people to slow down, notice the small details, and experience the natural world with fresh eyes. Whether you join a guided hike in the forest or along the ocean, Sue blends storytelling, ecology, and a sense of wonder to help you experience the coast in a meaningful way.
